Separating parents can do their children enormous harm by using them as a “battlefield” and “ammunition”, a senior family court judge has warned.
Sir Nicholas Wall, president of the Family Division of the High Court, said well-educated parents were particularly adept at using their children.
Sir Nicholas said a less adversarial approach was needed in the family justice system.
He made his comments in a speech to the charity Families Need Fathers.
Sir Nicholas said: “People think that post-separation parenting is easy – in fact, it is exceedingly difficult, and as a rule of thumb my experience is that the more intelligent the parent, the more intractable the dispute.
“Parents simply do not realise the damage they do to their children by the battles they wage over them.
“Separating parents rarely behave reasonably, although they always believe that they are doing so, and that the other party is behaving unreasonably.”
A child was not a “piece of property which can be parcelled up and moved around at will”, he said.

Ministers are being urged to drop criminal prosecutions for under-12′s in all but the most serious of cases, such as rape, murder and manslaughter.
Children’s charity Barnardo’s says there are cheaper and more effective ways to tackle offending by young children. These include family-wide intervention projects for offending children, who are often close to going into care.
Barnardo’s says prosecution and conviction are necessary for very young children who commit the most serious offences. But it wants the criminal age of responsibility to be raised from 10 to 12, for all cases except for murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, rape and aggravated sexual assault.
According to the Barnardo’s report – From Playground To Prison: The Conveyor Belt To Crime – more than 5,600 10 and 11 year-olds go through the criminal justice system each year, with the vast majority being given a reprimand or final warning.
But despite the fact that the majority of children are committing low-level crimes, reoffending rates are often high.
