Portsmouth student became a bus driver to fund university courses

louise-burtonA student has told how she became a bus driver to pay her way through university.

Louisa Burton would drive students home from pubs and clubs in her night job in order to cover her tuition fees and living costs.

The 22-year-old is set to graduate from Portsmouth University on Wednesday (21/07) after completing her studies in accounting and business.

Miss Burton, of Inverness, began driving buses when she was 18.

She started driving as a summer job after spotting an advert after finishing school and became one of the youngest bus drivers in Scotland.

“I really enjoyed the bus driving and decided that it’d be silly not to continue with it once I’d started university,” she said.

Miss Burton travelled to Hampshire two weeks before her course was due to start so she could learn the local bus routes.

She worked five shifts a week including two “Guildhall shifts”, where she worked from midnight until 0400 BST collecting fellow students from local pubs and nightclubs.

Miss Burton now works as a trainee accountant in Inverness and is not planning to continue her career as a bus driver.

Children of 10 can obtain gun licences

shotgunChildren as young as 10 are being given shotgun licences in the east of England.

In figures released to the BBC under the Freedom of Information Act, it has been revealed that across the East more than 1,000 under 18′s have licences.

Anti-gun campaigners have expressed concern at the figures, but shooting enthusiasts have argued that it is a responsible sport.

The minimum age for holding a shotgun licence is 10. And the minimum age for obtaining a firearms licence is 14.

Hertfordshire Police issued the most shotgun and firearms licences to under 18′s with 301 being given out.

A spokeswoman for the Gun Control Network told the BBC News website: “We oppose the idea of anyone under the age of 18 being given a firearm or shotgun. We totally oppose this – children and guns do not mix. If people are familiar with guns they are far more likely to use them.”

Warning on ‘forgotten teenagers’ in the UK

youth-sadMore teenagers in England may be out of education, training or work (Neet) and for longer periods than previously thought, a study has suggested.

An Audit Commission of 10 areas suggested that one-in-four 16 to 18 year-olds were categorised as Neets at some point in a two-year period.

Of those – dubbed ‘forgotten teens’ in the report – 43% were Neets for at least six months.

Annual official figures suggest about 10% of 16 to 18-year-olds are Neets.

The report warned that the 10% who were not in education, employment or training for more than six months were at risk of falling into long-term joblessness, ill-health and criminality.

The Audit Commission report: Against the Odds – Re-engaging Young People in Education, Employment or Training, claims to have looked more deeply into the issue than any previous study. It analyses the records of 24,000 young people in 10 different areas between 2007 and 2009.

Adult drinking ‘scares’ children says report

drinkingNearly a third of UK children feel scared when they see adults drunk or drinking too much, a survey suggests.

Half of the 1,234 10 to 14-year-olds surveyed by Childwise for BBC Newsround said they had seen their parents drunk.

Nearly half were not bothered by adults drinking, but 16% said alcohol made adults angry and aggressive; 30% said they were scared when adults drank.

Childwise warned that action would be needed to prevent binge drinking worsening among the next generation.

Childwise research director Rosemary Duff said the 30% who felt scared when adults drank was a “sizeable minority”. But she said it was also a concern that nearly half of children were “not bothered” by drunkenness, which, she said, suggested drinking culture had become “ingrained”.
